Let's Practice

In English, there are certain words that often occur together. For example, as you saw in the above sentences, the verbs 'make'/ 'break' and the noun 'promise' can be used together to make phrases such as: make a promise to (sb) -- break (one's) promise to (sb). Sometimes whole sentences can be used without any change, or with slight (grammar) changes. For example, after someone helped you with something, you could just say, Thank you very much for your help! Noticing these and other collocations and fixed chunks in listening/reading, and trying to use them in speech/writing, can help you sound more natural and fluent in English.
That is why in this post, we have singled out for practice fixed phrases and expressions from the video that you can learn to use in similar conversation contexts :)

Listen Again: Fill in the gaps with words from the video (the highlighted parts show the chunks in which the target words are often used)

Wife: Okay! When we ________ the news to the kids, we need to do it in a way that doesn't make one of us seem like the bad guy. We need to let them _______ that we still love them. We just don't love each other.

Husband: Yeah, you're right. But look! It's okay. I'll ________ the conversation. If they have any anger, it'll be towards me. They can't be mad forever.

Husband: Well, they've always liked you more anyway.

Husband: Kids! Your mom and I love you very much.

Wife: So very much.

Husband: You were just the best kids in the gosh-darn world. And we are so _______ to be your parents. And that's why I'm ________ your allowance by 5 whole dollars.

Children: Yay!

Wife: What?!

Son: Thank you, daddy.

Daughter: You're the best dad ______!
